When a Philadelphia fireplace needs repair, not a sweep

  • Firebrick cracked or spalling so you can see past the face of the brick
  • Mortar joints in the firebox washed out, crumbling or simply gone
  • Smoke rolling into the room instead of drawing up the flue
  • A damper that will not open, will not close or no longer seals
  • A cracked hearth or a lintel sagging over the fireplace opening

Many fireplaces in Philadelphia rowhomes were built for a different fuel and century, and the firebox shows it first. The inspection separates a firebox repair from a liner problem or a flue that just needs cleaning.

What fireplace repair in Philadelphia includes

Wood-burning fireplaces, masonry fireboxes and wood inserts. If yours runs on gas, that is gas fireplace repair, a different visit.

Firebox repair and repointing

Cracked firebrick replaced and open joints repointed in refractory mortar. A firebox broken through in several places is rebuilt, not patched.

Smoke chamber parging

The rough, stepped space above the damper is smoothed and parged so smoke is drawn up instead of tumbling back into the room.

Damper repair and replacement

Seized, rusted and warped dampers freed, rebuilt or replaced, including top sealing dampers that shut the flue at the crown.

Hearth, lintel and throat

Cracked hearths, loose lintels, and a throat shaped wrongly for the flue, the usual reason a fireplace smokes.

Fireplace repair questions from Philadelphia

Why does smoke come into the room instead of going up the chimney?

Usually one of four things. The damper is not opening fully, the flue is blocked, the smoke chamber is rough or wrongly shaped, or the opening is too large for the flue. The first two are often sorted that visit.

Can cracked firebrick be repaired, or does the whole firebox need rebuilding?

Individual cracked bricks and open joints are replaced and repointed. A firebox broken through in several places, or with brick shifting, gets rebuilt. We photograph the inside so you can see which.

Is a cracked firebox actually dangerous?

Yes. The firebox is the barrier between the fire and the framing behind it, and a crack lets heat and combustion gases reach places they were never meant to. The US Fire Administration guidance on home heating fires explains why it gets checked yearly.

Do you repair fireplaces in Philadelphia rowhomes?

Yes. Rowhome fireboxes, party wall stacks and narrow street access are normal work across Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. We bring a lift when the chimney top is not safely reachable from the roof.

Do I need the chimney swept before you can quote a repair?

The flue and firebox have to be clean enough to see, so if creosote is in the way a cleaning comes first. The $59 Philadelphia inspection tells us. Call (215) 201-4371 and describe what it is doing.
