Signs a Philadelphia chimney cap or crown has failed

  • A water stain beside the fireplace or on the ceiling nearby
  • Brick flaking high on the stack while the rest looks sound
  • Cracks across the crown, the slab at the top of the masonry
  • Birds or squirrels heard in the flue, or a cap sitting crooked
  • A rusted chase cover streaking the siding of a prefab chimney

In Philadelphia the stack often sits on a rowhome party wall with no safe roof to stand on, so this is lift work more than ladder work. In Fishtown, Kensington and Frankford the crown has taken decades of freeze and thaw.

What chimney cap and crown work in Philadelphia covers

One visit for the whole chimney top. Masonry lower down, flashing and leaks are chimney repair.

Caps fitted and fabricated

Stainless caps sized to the flue, custom fabricated when the opening is not standard, to keep rain, downdraft and animals out.

Crown repair and rebuilding

Hairline cracking gets sealed. A crown that has broken up or lost its overhang gets rebuilt, since coating loose concrete hides it.

Chase covers and top sealing

The metal chase cover on a prefab chimney rusts through and leaks. We replace it, and can waterproof and top seal masonry on the same lift.

Animal guards and spark arrestors

Mesh that keeps animals out and embers in. If something is nesting, removal comes first, which the chimney inspection finds.

Chimney cap and crown questions from Philadelphia

What is the difference between a chimney cap and a chimney crown?

The crown is the slab atop the masonry that sheds water off the stack. The cap is the lid and mesh over the flue opening. A Philadelphia chimney can need either or both.

Do I need a cap if I never use the fireplace?

Yes. An open flue takes rain, snow and nesting animals even if you never light a fire, and that water works on the mortar and liner. The Chimney Safety Institute of America covers chimney fire and carbon monoxide hazards.

Can a cracked crown be sealed instead of rebuilt?

Sometimes. Hairline cracking can be sealed with a flexible coating, and that buys real years. A crown broken into pieces gets rebuilt instead. The $59 inspection tells you which you have.

Do you work on rowhome chimneys you cannot reach from the roof?

Yes. Narrow streets and party wall stacks are normal work in Philadelphia. We bring a boom lift when the roof is not a safe platform, and say so up front if a block cannot be reached.

Will a new cap stop the water stain on my living room wall?

It will if the water is coming down the flue. If it is coming through a cracked crown, failed flashing or open joints, a cap will not touch it, so we check all three.

While the lift is up

If the inspection finds a cracked liner, liner installation can use the same access. The $59 inspection is on the specials page.

A missing cap usually means a season of debris in the flue, so ask about a chimney sweep at the same time.
