At least once a year, and sooner the moment a normal load needs a second cycle. That is the National Fire Protection Association’s line. Mount Laurel townhomes with long vent runs, busy households and shedding pets usually do better on a six-month check.
How often should you clean your dryer vent in Mount Laurel, NJ? At least once a year. The National Fire Protection Association’s dryer safety guidance puts it plainly: clean the lint out of the vent pipe once a year, or more often if your clothes are taking longer than normal to dry.
That second half is the part most people skip. Once a year is a floor, not a target. Mount Laurel’s housing is mostly townhouses, condos and single homes built since 1970, from Ramblewood’s early streets to the thousands of townhouses and condos around the Lakes at Larchmont. In a lot of those layouts the dryer sits in an interior closet or an upstairs laundry, and the vent has to travel a long way, with turns, before it reaches an outside wall or the roof.
Every extra foot and every elbow is somewhere lint can settle. That is why two houses on the same Mount Laurel street can need very different schedules. If you would rather have someone look, our dryer vent cleaning is $69 right now, and it includes cleaning inside the machine plus a new flexible connector hose. Our Mount Laurel dryer vent service page covers the visit itself.
The calendar is the least important part. The run, the laundry and the connector decide it.
| Your home | Our starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Short run straight out a side wall, one or two people | Once a year | Little run for lint to settle in, modest laundry volume. |
| Townhome or condo with a long run, several elbows or a roof exit | Every 6 to 12 months | Long, turning runs load up faster, and a roof exit is harder to check yourself. |
| Family of four or more, laundry most days, or shedding pets | Every 6 months | More loads means more lint past the trap, and pet hair adds to it. |
| Plastic or foil accordion connector behind the dryer | Replace it, then once a year | NFPA calls for rigid or flexible metal venting to keep airflow and drying time right. |
| A normal load needs two cycles, or the dryer runs hot | Now | This is NFPA’s “more often” trigger. The schedule no longer matters. |
These are our starting points, not a code requirement. The one hard line is NFPA’s: at least once a year, sooner if drying slows down. We adjust from there based on what we actually find in your vent.
Any one of these moves you straight to the “now” row of the table.
The U.S. Fire Administration’s report on residential clothes dryer fires found they run higher in the fall and winter months, peaking in January at 11 percent of the year’s total. The same report named failure to clean as the leading factor contributing to ignition, at 34 percent, and dust, fiber and lint as the leading item first ignited.
Put those together and the timing is obvious. Winter laundry means towels, sweaters and heavy bedding, and the dryer runs more often. NFPA also reminds homeowners to keep the outdoor vent flap clear of snow. Getting the run cleaned before the cold months, rather than in the middle of them, is the easy version of this.

The questions Mount Laurel homeowners ask most before booking.
At least once a year, which is the National Fire Protection Association baseline, and sooner if a normal load starts taking longer to dry. Townhomes and condos with long vent runs, households doing laundry most days, and homes with shedding pets usually do better with a check every six months. If drying times are creeping up, the vent is due.
No. The lint trap catches most of the lint, not all of it. What gets past it settles along the vent run, especially at elbows and low spots, and the trap cannot reach any of that. Clean the trap before or after every load, as NFPA advises, and have the full vent run cleaned at least once a year.
It comes down to where the dryer sits. In many townhomes and condos the dryer is in an interior closet or an upstairs laundry area, so the vent travels farther, with more turns, to reach an outside wall or the roof. Longer runs with more elbows give lint more places to settle, so they load up faster than a short run straight out a side wall.
Drying times stretch out first, then the dryer runs hotter because moist air cannot get out. The bigger risk is fire. The U.S. Fire Administration found failure to clean was the leading factor in residential clothes dryer fires, at 34 percent, and that these fires peak in the fall and winter months.
Cleaning the full vent run, cleaning inside the dryer, and replacing the flexible connector hose behind the machine at no extra cost. It is listed on our specials page. If we find something beyond cleaning, such as a crushed section or a stuck exterior flap, we tell you on the spot.
